Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for starting treatment?

Once you have discussed treatment options with your Oncologist or Haematologist and made the decision to go ahead, your treatment appointments will then be scheduled. An education session will also be scheduled with one of our Oncology Registered Nurses. The number of treatments required and their duration varies depending on each person and what type of treatment they are having.

Where does treatment take place?

Your treatment will take place in our clinic on Level 3 of the Westside Private Hospital in Taringa, with floor to ceiling views of Brisbane.

Are there side effects involved with treatment?

There are side affects with many types of treatment which vary from person to person. Side affects will be explained by your Oncologist or Haematologist and Oncology nurse. They will also be able to give advice on how to manage side effects.

What costs are involved with treatment?

Westside Haematology and Oncology Clinic is licensed with Queensland Health as a day-hospital and has current contracts with all major health funds. When you receive treatment within our day hospital and have private health insurance with appropriate coverage, invoices are issued under the terms of these contracts. You will be asked to sign a claim form at the time of discharge. This claim will be lodged with your private health fund on your behalf.

There are no out-of-pocket costs for patients with private health insurance, with the exception of the following (if applicable);

  • Excess on your Private Health Insurance
  • Co-payment on your Private Health Insurance
  • Exclusion of services on your elected level of cover
  • Medications for use at home
  • High-cost pharmaceuticals that are not covered under the PBS (unless costs have been approved by health fund)

Providing the most advanced medical treatment to patients may mean higher-cost pharmaceuticals are incorporated into patients’ treatment plans.

Westside Haematology and Oncology Clinic’s chosen provider for cytotoxic and supportive medication is Wesley Pharmacy. As part of patients’ informed consent in deciding to go ahead with treatment, patients are asked to sign an agreement to receive their medication from Wesley Pharmacy. Patients’ medication is conveniently available from our clinic and Wesley Pharmacy invoices patients directly.
